Data Scientist
About the Company
Root Insurance is the world's first mobile-only, usage-based-insurance-only car insurance company! Located in Columbus, Ohio, Root was founded in 2015 with the goal of solving the following problem: good drivers pay FAR too much for car insurance. If the sensors in your smartphone prove to us that you are a safe driver, then we will give you an unbeatable price, which we can afford to do since we don't sell insurance to dangerous drivers. Other guiding principles at Root are the improvement of UX via extensive testing, and the achievement of efficiency through modern technology and paradigms. Root currently has around 300 employees, but we are growing very rapidly! Root is an exciting, happy, inclusive place to work, where you are free to be yourself. Employment at Root includes a competitive benefits package including a flexible vacation policy, a 401K with partial company match, paid health insurance for the employee, etc. Root has raised almost $200 million in venture capital funding to date, and we recently closed our Series D, raising $100 million in capital at a $1 billion valuation in August 2018.

The Job:
Root is seeking a data scientist to help our team add business value by leveraging vast quantities of data and building more accurate predictive models. Examples of some of the rich data sources we work with include smartphone telematics sensor data, marketing campaign results, and unstructured data from claims notes, phone calls, etc. The ideal candidate will have experience putting well-defined parameters around potentially ambiguous problems, evaluating success based on business-important criteria, and applying modern machine learning techniques to large datasets. This may include querying/scraping/otherwise procuring datasets, cleaning/munging, signal processing, feature engineering, model choice/evaluation, and validation using reproducible methods and scalable architecture. Particular attention will also be paid to the interface between R&D environments and productionizing models. Furthermore, the candidate will need the ability to learn new tools on the fly and be adaptable to changing requirements.

Key Problems Include:
- Mining text data for use in classification / predicting business outcomes.
- Building anomaly detection models to determine fraudulent activity, unexpected trends in data, etc.
- Applying machine learning to image classification for key business applications.
- Identifying, evaluating, and productionizing new data sources (e.g. geospatial data, web scraping, cell phone sensors).
- Predictive modeling related to improving insurance pricing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills, especially R and/or Python
  • Demonstrated experience in building, validating, and leveraging machine learning models
  • Demonstrated skill with data mining, data munging, coping with missing / corrupt / unstructured data
  • 1+ years of industry experience building predictive models OR graduate-level research in a relevant area

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in mathematics, physical sciences, engineering, or other technical discipline
  • 3+ years of industry experience building predictive models
  • Experience using big data tools (e.g. Hadoop, Spark) and cloud computing (AWS preferred)
  • Experience with version control (git/GitHub preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of physics, linear algebra, probability/statistics
  • Experience building insurance pricing models

Element AI
Software Developer - Human Computer Interaction
  • How does touching information feel?
  • Does data have a face, and if so, what does it look like?
  • Can you sense anomalies in your production line as you would a disturbance in the Force?
  • How do you configure an AI system without explicitly configuring it, but instead letting it get to know you, and the way you work?
  • When do you delegate tasks to AI, and when do you jump back in?

Ultimately, how does our work evolve in collaboration with AI in the most natural and ethical way?

These are some of the questions you’ll ponder as a Technical Lead on the Human-AI Interaction (HAII) team at Element AI. In fact, you’ll do more than ponder: your mission will be to find the answers through rapid experimentation. You’ll explore the best ways for human-AI teams to work together, alongside a small crew of awesome, super-committed people from diverse backgrounds.

We’re looking for

You are a neophile; you love trying and learning new things. You are creative and love the challenge of finding deeply different approaches and framings to novel problems, you don't just apply existing patterns. You are driven by shared vision and values more than process.

You are able to hold dichotomies in your head comfortably - for example, you can be both afraid and un-afraid of taking risks. You aren’t nervous about breaking stuff, though you do it with intention and care. You are both autonomous and collaborative. Making mistakes doesn’t make you apprehensive - you know that it’s the fastest way to learning, so long as it causes no harm.

Oh, and speaking of comfort - you eat it for breakfast, and go on to swim in uncertainty for the rest of the day. Comfortably.

What you’ll do

Experience and self-sufficiency are important. You’ll probably work in Python, or maybe Go, but what really matters are the outcomes. We’re looking for people who are more interested in defining exactly how to get things done rather than being handed a to-do list. You’ll help our team implement experiments one day, and work on plumbing things together the next. You will discover and/or come up with new ways to creatively solve data problems. In a pinch, you’ll implement “programmer art” user interfaces. In short, you’ll help us move forward to value in the best way that you possibly can, without ego.

A few months after you’ve joined the team, we could very well be delivering a prototype combining machine learning, speech- and video- recognition, brain-computer interfaces, and natural user experience design, that we will test with a small group of internal users. They’ll love it because it will make their complex jobs more manageable. Exactly what problem will this prototype solve? We have a lot of ideas, but don’t worry - you’ll be key to figuring that out once you join.

Eventually, you’ll add technical team members to our crew to increase experiment velocity. But first, you’ll get your hands very (very!) dirty.

What we offer for your valuable work

  • Highly dynamic, innovative, passionate, entrepreneurial team;
  • Open and inclusive company culture;
  • Worldwide competitive salary;
  • Participation in the company success through the Employee Stock Option Plan;
  • Flexible hours (outside of core hours);
  • Autonomous, self-managed Agile teams.

What is Element AI

Element AI is one of the world’s largest applied artificial intelligence companies and one of Canada’s fastest growing startups. We constantly push the frontier of knowledge, tackling the world's biggest and most interesting challenges in artificial intelligence, machine learning and operations research.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Software Engineer (Full Stack)
Our Vodori Interactive team builds unique custom web applications for clients in the Life Sciences industry, often integrating with our own Pepper Cloud platform. We're looking for versatile and collaborative engineers who are eager to teach what they already know, and who jump at an opportunity to explore new territory.

As a Full Stack Developer, you'll work with Vodori engineers, consultants, and designers to plan, architect, develop, and support a wide variety of custom software products. You’ll most likely have 3-5 years of software development experience and a strong background in Java or similar backend languages. We expect that you'll also have experience with either or all of Node.js, Vue, Angular, React, or similar frameworks.

We're an incredibly supportive group, and we crave new, challenging ideas. In this role you'll delve into new subject matter every day, and you'll have the opportunity to introduce us to new technologies and approaches that can help make our team, our projects, and our clients as successful as they can be.
Within 3 months, you will…
  • Learn Vodori processes, technologies, and lingo
  • Implement features in client projects using Java and Javascript frameworks
  • Participate in technical project planning and estimation
  • Build relationships with consulting team members while learning about our client industries
  • Bring excitement to the table around doing things in new and innovative ways
Within 6 months, you will…
  • Be responsible for planning, scoping, design, and implementation
  • Host company-wide technology discussions and education sessions on the subjects that excite you
  • Navigate Vodori’s stack and infrastructure fluently
  • Provide technical guidance on client feature development
Within 12 months, you will…
  • Provide technical leadership on complex client projects
  • Train and mentor your peers
Applied Research Scientist, Video Understanding
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities — we're just getting started.
Every day, massive amounts of video are uploaded into Facebook's services. In order to serve our communities better, it is critical that we can understand this content; think about being able to answer questions like "This person will like this video because...." or "This person will find this video inappropriate because..." Our goals broadly encompass content understanding, including the ability to produce video summaries, categorize content according to topic and purpose, identify audio events, find key-frames, and do keyword spotting. To achieve these goals, we are building a Video Understanding team in New York City, that will engage in a multidisciplinary effort combining speech recognition, natural language processing, and image processing. We view video as inherently multi-modal content, and seek to develop methods that use all the information available. We are looking for researchers in machine learning and AI with strong software engineering skills, and a desire to build systems that will ship to billions of people. The Video Understanding Team is part of the Applied Machine Learning organization. The team carries out applied research in ML/AI and designs, develops and deploys state of the art ML/AI algorithms to the rest of Facebook. Our algorithms are used for ranking, improving content integrity, keeping communities safe, and power multiple product experiences across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus.

  • Develop highly scalable algorithms based on state-of-the-art machine learning and neural network methodologies
  • Conduct research to advance the state-of-the-art, and publish work in relevant speech, NLP, and machine learning conferences and journals
  • Apply expert coding skills to projects in partnership with other engineers across research, product, and infrastructure teams
  • Adapt machine learning and neural network algorithms for training competitive, state-of-the-art models which make the best use of modern parallel environments (e.g. distributed clusters, GPU)
  • MS degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field with 5+ years of work experience, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field
  • Knowledge of machine learning, neural networks, and deep learning
  • Experience building systems based on machine learning and/or deep learning methods, especially in the areas of speech recognition, natural language processing, image processing, or other machine-perception tasks
  • Experience developing and debugging in C/C++ and/or Python

Engineering Manager - Infrastructure

Lead the teams building Slack's infrastructure.

Slack enables people all over the world to communicate and collaborate together. Teams of all scales — from the world’s largest public companies to the smallest of startups — use Slack to get work done, so we take performance and reliability very seriously. A taste of our scale:

  • The average user spends over 10 hours connected and 2.5 hours active in Slack every single day
  • 1.5 billion messages are sent per month, half of those outside the United States
  • Every day we see over 3.5 million simultaneously connected users, over a billion web requests, and 10s of billions of database queries.

For millions of people, Slack is the primary communication tool they use at work all day long. They expect it to be exceptionally reliable and fast, all the time.

Infrastructure at Slack

We operate at tremendous scale with systems that process millions of events per second. Our team maintains and builds the lower levels of our stack, including:

  • Edge services
  • Real-time messaging
  • Asynchronous background job processing

We know we’ve done our job correctly when none of our users think about us. We don’t typically ship new user-facing features, but rather ensure our systems are incredibly performant, highly available, reliable, resilient, and scalable. In other words, Slack just works seamlessly.

Slack's API and web backend is built on PHP/Hack, and our backend services are written in Java and Go. Our data infrastructure is built on Kafka, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, Spark, and MySQL. Our Chief Architect, Keith Adams, spoke about our architecture at QCon in 2016.

Our Team

We are looking for an engineering manager to lead the Infrastructure team. You will report to the Director of Core Infrastructure Engineering and will work closely with other managers in Infrastructure and Service Engineering.

We are a small team making a large impact. We rapidly iterate and work closely with other teams in engineering to ensure we build resilient systems that can scale. We have a strong commitment to quality and understand that simplicity and reliability should be primary aspects of the systems that we build. We are scrappy, independent, and pragmatic. Infrastructure is a diverse and inclusive team that treats their colleagues exceptionally well.

What you should have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.

Product Designer with frontend experience

About us:

BioRender is a fast growing SaaS startup. We’re creating the standard visual language of biology and the suite of tools to communicate it. We are a team of passionate engineers, science illustrators, designers and entrepreneurs and are backed by an incredible group of investors, including Y Combinator. We nerd out on cool science stuff and solving big problems. We work really hard and sweat the details to deliver a high impact product that our users love.

The problem we’re solving:

Each year, biomedical researchers waste over a billion hours trying to communicate their research by drawing complex biology figures using tools like PowerPoint. These products weren’t built for scientists so are very time consuming and produce poor quality results. What’s worse, if you google any biological concept you’ll find hundreds of figures that look very different but are trying to communicate the exact same thing. At BioRender, our mission is have every visual representation of biology made and communicated with our tools. We reduce the time it takes scientists to create visuals from hours to minutes while drastically improving the quality. We save scientists 10-20 hours per month, giving them more time for the important stuff!

If you see something that’s broken, or a customer who’s unhappy, you do everything you can to fix it asap. You love design trends but focus foremost on users and function over aesthetic. You approach design in an iterative and collaborative way. You are comfortable with web technologies (React, CSS, HTML5, javascript) and can translate your designs to code. You love technical challenges and finding new ways to solve difficult problems. You aren’t afraid to learn new technologies or how to integrate with existing tools and libraries. You’re high-reaching, results-focused, metrics-driven and always learning. You appreciate self-growth and personal development and you’re looking to grow with the company.

  • Professional experience (3+ years) in digital product design and proficiency in modern design tools (Sketch or Figma)
  • Front-end development skills (CSS, HTML5, Javascript, ReactJS)
  • Very detail oriented and have up-to-date knowledge on design trends
  • Passionate about design but always consider functionality over aesthetics
  • Be able to interface/collaborate with full-stack/back-end developer team for seamless integration
  • Be very open to discussing process and subscribe to an iterative approach to design
  • Candidate must be eligible to work in Canada

Sample projects:

  • Work closely with our illustration and development team to create and impletement intuitive, easy-to-use user interface designs
  • Help with V1 overhaul by creating elegant, industry standard UI designs to replace the first design versions of the web application

(Senior) Software Engineer

Challenge - Build the brains of our satellite IoT system

Come join a team that has the audacious goal to build a communication system that changes the world. Hiber delivers connectivity to sensor systems (IoT) with a global satellite footprint. It is low power and low cost so we enable use cases that would not be possible otherwise, because of connectivity issues. This enables global climate monitoring, precision farming, marine life protection and many other ways to improve life on earth.

Your job as a software engineer is to develop anything that runs on top of a computer processor. We control the complete chain of software in our system, from the firmware of the modems on the ground, to the satellite on board computers and the backend where all the data is processed. This means we have a broad spectrum of environments. We run on bare metal, FreeRTOS or Linux and implement in C, C++, Golang, Kotlin/Java and Python.

Your day to day is usually focussed on one of the big functional components of our system, but you are encouraged to contribute where you can. You will be a great fit if you feel at home with both embedded hardware as well as web based platforms.

What we have for you

  • A state of the art, satellite IoT telecommunication system,

  • Many backend applications to work on: customer data API’s, satellite pass scheduling system, our mission and network control center and many more,

  • A team of true experienced professionals with many disciplines and even more big brains to work with,

  • An open engineering culture where you both build and design the technology,

  • Flexible hours, work-from-home options and we also don't micromanage your vacation days,

  • Being part of a groundbreaking innovation with 21st century tech pioneers,

  • Head office on the canals @ Keizersgracht and the technical office in Delft near the TU Delft Campus ground.

You have

  • A Bachelor degree in Computer Science, or equivalent,
  • At least 3 years of experience as a software engineer,
  • Experience with statically typed programming languages,
  • Applicable knowledge of data structures and their limitations,
  • Understand what big-O notation is and be able to reason about it,
  • A good understanding of software architecture and testable code,
  • The people skills required to work with engineers, project managers and customer support agents,
  • Fluency in spoken and written English,
  • Motivation and drive. You volunteer for new challenges without waiting to be asked.

Bonus points for

  • A Master degree in Computer Science, or related field,
  • DevOps experience,
  • Experience with container based deployment systems,
  • Expert knowledge of C/C++,
  • FPGA programming experience / VHDL or Verilog,
  • Experience in RF signal processing such as preamble detection, preamble tracking and (de)modulation.

To land this gig you will need to be comfortable designing big parts of our core system with a very small team. As such it helps if you can show that you have worked on one or more other subjects like electrical engineering, frontend engineering, etc. Internships, side projects and university teams all count. Just make sure we can pick up on some of that stuff in your cover letter (video works too) or resume.

Hiber is an eclectic team of like-minded, big-hearted and seriously motivated guys and girls who want to change the world, for good. Pushing the boundaries is what drives us. We love tech. More importantly, we love what we know it can do to make everyone’s life better. And it is that human touch, that desire to improve everything, that sets us all apart and gives us a real buzz. We think of ourselves as 21st century tech pioneers. Exploring new possibilities every day. Doing what no one ever dared to do before. And succeeding. For us, tech isn’t a new app, game or social media fad. It’s a chance to make a real difference, long-term. Not a quick buck short-term.

To date, we hang out in offices in Amsterdam and Delft (home of a big tech university) in the Netherlands. But with more and more, open-minded thinkers and doers wanting to join us, who knows where’s next. For the space junkies amongst you, we launch our satellites with PSLV in India and SpaceX from Cape Canaveral.

Frontend Developer

Karma is engineering for the future, fighting food waste through technology. We are growing fast, scaling our business, our teams, and most importantly: our impact.

The role

As a Frontend developer at Karma, you will build client apps using web technologies with the goal of delighting and increasing the success of our users. You probably have an eye for well functioning user interfaces, and have at least cursory insight into both design and UX principles. You will be working across a wide range of applications, including our React Native apps, as a vital part of our cross-functional teams.

We value your autonomy and your space to be yourself. You can take the role you need to be, be it a grinder, or a full on creative collaborator. We will always value finding the right person before experience. We are humble, embracing differences, and have a strict “no assholes” policy.

We dare to question what others would call facts, both in how we work and what we do.

However, we will expect you to be challenged by, engaged in and enthusiastic for your work, every day. And if you ever feel that you fail this criteria, we expect you to let us know.

Signal Sciences
#day-to-day-work summary
Product Designer

About Us

Signal Sciences empowers security and engineering teams by providing visible and effective web application security protecting against real-world attacks. With our unique hybrid on-premise and cloud architecture, we process, protect and report on billions of requests per day for some of the most sophisticated companies in the world ranging from Adobe to Vimeo, Taser to Under Armour. Our goal is making a more secure Web, with tools that people love to use, written by people who love to make them.

About the role

Product designers at Signal Sciences work across all four layers of design (outcomes, structure, interaction, visual). You’ll get to think strategically about how to make security problems visible and actionable for our customers, while simultaneously working at the feature level to design interfaces and interactions that add up to a powerful, cohesive and delightful experience.

While all product designers at Signal Sciences are expected to carry a project from research to polished final product, you will have primary responsibility for defining product screens and flows that map to our users’ core tasks, as well as the supporting IA and structure of our application - a meaningful but focused problem space. Questions you’ll get get to come in and tackle every day include:

  • How do we onboard new users and make the value of the product evident?
  • How might our tool help bridge gaps between security teams, DevOps, and software engineering?
  • What are the core task flows our product needs to enable, and what structures do we need to design in order to support these journeys?
  • How do we use design to transform complex datasets into insights?
  • How do we design interactions and flows that allow users to act on insights to protect their applications and respond to attacks?
  • How do we measure the impact of changes to our product’s design?

About you

You should have interest and some experience with all the different facets of product design, from UX research and interaction design to visual design and prototyping. However, we are looking for someone who is strong at distilling complexity at the feature level - a designer who thinks beyond pixels and across touch points to create features that are valuable. The right designer for this role will:

  • Be an accomplished UX designer who can solve challenging user experience problems with simple, empathetic solutions.
  • Have experience solving tough interaction problems and thinking through the challenges that come with structuring a large, complex application.
  • Conduct user research to uncover tasks, model information, navigation and flows using UX
  • Be a strategic thinker who works hard to correctly frame tough problems, thereby setting teams up to deliver successful solutions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to design polished user interfaces and interactions. While you will often be working to solve high-level problems, you have great taste and a solid understanding of color, typography, motion and visual hierarchy.
  • Use systems thinking to deliver design at scale, rather than creating one-off solutions.
  • Have a deep understanding of the materials and constraints of the web. While this role may not contribute production code, you should be familiar with modern front-end engineering tools and practices.
  • Embrace a highly iterative design process. We value teammates who are highly adaptive and great listeners. You must be adept at giving and receiving critiques in a collaborative environment.

The details

  • This position is part of the Product Design team
  • This is an individual contributor role (not people management)
  • Located in Los Angeles
  • Suitable for mid- and senior-level designers

What skills do I need? 📖

  • 5+ years of industry experience in a software engineering role, preferably building a SaaS product. You can demonstrate significant impact that your work has had on the product and/or the team.
  • Deep knowledge of a high-level programming language (for example, Ruby, Python, Perl etc.) but it doesn’t need to be a language that we use here! Great people are effective and learn what we use quickly (or introduce us to better ways of working)
  • Experience collaborating directly with product teams and designers, and a proven track record of delivering value to customers or users. Engineers at Intercom are pragmatists who work closely with others on cross-disciplinary teams
  • Experience with Distributed systems

What happens when I apply? 🤓

First, apply so we can review your CV :) As the next step, we will send you our take-home test to work on in your own time. You can find more details on the questions and how we evaluate answers here. The following step will be a phone interview with one of our engineers which will focus on technical and culture contribution questions (this step is sometimes broken down into 2 interviews). The final step is an onsite interview in our Dublin office (we can help with travel arrangements, visas etc.).
